I have been trying to eliminate all the subscriptions and monthly fees that I can. I recently cancelled the home phone, newspaper, and several magazine subscriptions. Will probably soon cancel the home trash pickup too. The rising cost of living is starting to bother me. My homeowners insurance just went up 30% and I pay all of my health insurance out of my pocket, its getting ridiculous.

The higher cost of oil is just now trickling thru the economy. The cost of everything that is grown, manufactured or transported MUST go up to cover higher energy costs. In other words, my friend, you ain't seen nothin yet.

In the mean time our government is making our most plentiful energy source, coal, non-competitive with imported oil. If I were king, I'd minimize (there need to be some) the onerous restrictions on coal mining and require all STATIONARY fossil fuel consumers to use coal freeing up oil and natural gas for vehicles and other non-stationary consumers. Whoops, getting a little political here. Best I stop now or Jay will moderate me.

With all the high temps at home last week & this week, 104F with the heat index of 111F last Saturday, rode to Little Switzerland last Saturday. I like the idea of having an event with enough elevation to beat the heat of the lower elevations and plenty of great roads, too.

This shot was @ Mount Mitchell, not too far from the Big Lynn Lodge last Saturday, the temps were more than 20F "less" than back home.

A great way to cool off!

I spent Friday night in Taos, NM on the way home from STAR. Randy Logan and I rode one of the STAR routes into town and another out on Saturday morning. Saturday morning on the way out through Angelfire, the road was completely free of traffic (the only time I've ever found it to be so after being there twice for STAR). It was spectacular, but a few miles up the road stopped to put my jacket liner on. Randy said his dash thermometer was indicating low to mid 40s. That was really not unpleasant with the liner. What WAS unpleasant was when we had gotten out the high country and the temps had gained 40+ degrees in a little over an hour. Yoikes!

We don't see "that much" of an elevation temp change around here, unless you're in an airplane. Above a favorite local road, Old NC 18, from another perspective, upside down:

North Carolina's Big Lynn Lodge Ride

It is my pleasure to invite ALL to an MSTA Non-Event
    July 27 - July 29, 2012

North Carolina's Big Lynn Lodge Ride
The Big Lynn Lodge is located about 300 feet off the Blue Ridge Parkway!

    www.BigLynnLodge.com
    800-654-5232 Vickie & Hoyte
Be sure to tell them this is the MSTA Event

The Big Lynn Lodge is located in/near Little Switzerland, NC and is literally hanging on the side of the mountain right on NC-226A. You will be AMAZED at the view but you will be ASTONISHED by the roads! The riding is what I go there for but the scenery and the location is what has me staying.
The Big Lynn Lodge has a unique "formula" in that all of there rooms nights stay INCLUDE an excellent home styled cooked evening meal and a full breakfast for each person (two to a room... a small fee for each additional person)!
I have negotiated special rates for this the second year for this
    The Big Lynn Lodge Ride
There is no registration fee for this event as it is an MSTA Just for Fun event. Obviously with no event fee there is less organization and less work for me. Last year we had some street routes and this year I hope to add a few dual sport routes and some Adventure bike routs. I could use some help in lying out the routes so if you want to help just let me know.

Check out the road the Big Lynn Lodge is located on here:

I stopped by the Big Lynn Lodge today. VERY IMPORTANT!! There are ONLY 6 rooms left for our Big Lynn Lodge event. So if you are interested you'd better reserve one ASAP!!
NOTE: You must cancel ONE WEEK prior to the event dates if you can't make it to the event.

It's gonna be a great time... I should have some routes soon. Doug is working on another one. Plus the ones I have from last year.

    Don't miss out!

Does that mean there will be more attending this year over last year? I am really looking forward to it again.

    Beth,
Yes we definitely have more this year than last year!

It should be a good one for sure. Hoyt said they have been having a lot of rain up there... but that he ordered GREAT weather for our weekend!

Are you gonna bring the gimp... or is he up and riding/walking?
