Last year the team took the bike to Maxton. I am not sure but I think they have moved to Wilmington where the runways are longer.

Yes it is cool. Hopefully they will have better luck than last year. There was a problem between the motor controller and motor and we could not get max power out of it. The thing I find interesting is how quickly companies are developing high power motors for applications like this. One motor out there puts out better than 150hp and weighs less than 50 lbs! As you can imagine this kind of leading edge technology is not cheap, motor and controller will set you back about 15 large. Kinda takes out of the range of backyard builders!

Yea, I suppose that once they start selling more the cost could come down?

Well supposing there is sufficient demand. Problem is making motors to generate that kind of power in a small and light package requires pretty expensive materials. We just replaced a 30HP motor on an air handler for the cleanroom and it weighs around 450 pounds and cost less than $1500,00! Granted some of this is due to the continuous duty cycle and the fact that it is air cooled versus liquid cooled like the motors the team is using or looking to buy. To me, unless there is a quantum jump in battery storage capacity, electric bikes will be more low powered commuters than high performance road bikes. There is a lot of research being done in materials and who knows what that will yield. It will be interesting to see where we are in five or ten years from now.

I'm back online here on the MSTA forum. I figured out that the server had died and all old info was lost. So here's post number 1.

    Later,

What ever happened to the "Geezer tour" that was to be set up as a loose plan to travel to STAR from Ohio area?

I guess the geezer tour idea fizzled out. Too many people had differing plans. Some need to save vacation time and bust it out in two days, although some are stretching it to 3 or 4. Everybody started breaking into small groups or ones and twos.

I'm cancelling my room reservation at the Christie Lodge as I'm joining two others in a 3-bedroom suite. If you want my room (one bedroom + foldout bed in front room) let me know as I'm going to cancel it on Saturday, June 16.
