Several questions come to mind off the cuff. Some tongue in cheek, and some not so much so. Can you assume that most MSTA members would represent "normal" riders, who is responsible for their equipment if it is torn up while on your bike, I'm assuming you can't cut the dang thing off when you come to a nice twisty section?:-), could you possibly be ticketed for transgressions recorded by the equipment, could information gathered in a possible crash be used to downgrade or deny your insurance coverage or prove liability on your part, It would be difficult to find a place to mount the thing on a fully dressed bike (bags-etc.). It's a great idea, and a good way to collect info, but I don't see myself doing it. What about you Brick? Syd

    Syd,

Some of your questions are addressed in the FAQ part of the study. The way I read it was that no-one can use the recorded data except the people doing the study - AS LONG AS the participants do not tell anyone they are part of the study.

Call me a little paranoid, but I think I would like an attorney to review and explain the privacy part of it to me before agreeing to participate.

It appears the study is restricted to certain makes and models of motorcycle in very specific locations of the country. I wonder if they will get a good cross-section of the riding community this way.

Well considering there limited study location areas, not many here would have a chance to participate. Maybe some in SoCal or FL.

Agree with others though, not sure I want anybody collecting data from my riding

Good point on the limited bikes they work with, at least they got some cross section (crusiers including no HD, big ST rigs like Gold Wing, and sport bikes.

Phil Ross is working with this project at VT. It sounds very cool. Real data from real riding. I don't know why you would have to live terribly close to the research centers. It would be a great excuse to take off to Virginia every so often for the data upload.

I had a chance to talk with someone about this study at the International Rider Education Training System Conference in May. The data acquisition systems are fairly complex, and they designed the systems to fit as unobtrusively as possible on a limited number of specific models. I suppose someone had to decide which models to use in the study, and I'm not sure how that was done.

Had I had one of the designated models, I'd have volunteered on the spot.

Help make tomorrow's riders safer. Today!

Is there a list of models that the system works on?

Hmmm... I can't imagine that they don't list ANY of my bikes! How rude!
