    New File Added: 2012 routes.zip

Downloads: A new file has been added by NomKern:

    2012 routes.zip

    Fly-By 2012 GPS Route Notes
All routes and track templates are in a single ZIP archive. This archive contains the following files:
    2012 Route maps.pdf-
PDF file contains maps showing each route with name, origin and mileage
All 2012 routes only.gdb- contains all route files in GDB format.
All 2012 routes only.gpx- same as above in newer GPX format
All 2012 unfiltered tracks.gdb- can be used with above routes in Mapsource as templates to check recalculation.
All 2012 unfiltered tracks.gpx- can be loaded into Garmin zumo 660 model GPS and used as “off-road tracks” or used with above routes in Mapsource as templates to check recalculation.
All 2012 filtered tracks.gdb- Split into 75 mile segments and filtered to 500 points per segment for GPS units that support tracks.
All 2012 filtered tracks.gpx- same as above in newer GPX format
There are 13 different routes in this package, compiled from several past years and routemasters. Each route is broken into two main parts- basically a morning and afternoon route.
For those adventurous souls who want to go down into the Gorge and cross the New River on the old bridge I have included the optional Bridge Ride Gorge route, which is about 8 miles long. It starts in the visitor center parking lot, goes through the gorge, up the other side and ends in the middle of the bridge going eastbound. Simply continue straight to pick up the beginning of the afternoon return route.
There are matching tracks for all routes that you can use in Garmin Mapsource as a check template when you recalculate as explained below.
GPS Settings and Tips for Fly-By12 Files:

    1. All routes were prepared using Garmin Mapsource Version 6.15.6 software.

    2. City Navigator North America 2012.3 mapset was used for all routes. Pre 2008 map databases may have a few problems because the routes use a couple of new roads not found in older databases.

    3. Routing preferences were set in Mapsource as follows:
    Route Style: Use Auto-routing
    Vehicle: Car/Motorcycle
    Calculation style: Faster Time
Road selection: Midway between 'prefer minor roads' and 'prefer highways'
Avoid: car-pool lanes, seasonal road closures
Very Important: Make sure to UNCHECK Avoid U-turns and Avoid Ferries. Both must be unchecked to get proper calculation on these routes.
    4. Load the routes into Mapsource and RECALCULATE each route using the above settings and the same map database that is loaded in your GPS- THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! Most recent model GPS units recalculate routes when they are imported. Tracks have been provided as templates- they will not change when you recalculate so you can easily see if you need to add any extra waypoints.

    5. In your GPS make the following settings:

Recalculation must be turned OFF. Not just PROMPTED, but OFF.
    Set navigation to Follow Road
    Calculation style: Faster Time
    6. Manage your Waypoints as explained below, then upload your RCR09 routes and waypoints.
    7. Happy Navigating!

    Manage Your Waypoints

These routes have all been redone to conventional waypoints only for beginning, end, some gas stops and lunch stops. They will load into your GPS along with the routes. To save hunting them down and manually deleting them after Fly-BY12, do yourself a favor and

    1. Copy all of your existing waypoints to a separate Mapsource backup file before you load the Fly-BY12 routes. I usually name the file with the date and the word "waypoints," like 120824Waypoints.gdb.

    2. Upload the Fly-BY12 routes and waypoints to your GPS. Because there are so many routes, only load the ones you are interested in in your GPS. Now you are ready to go.

    3. When you return home from the rally, save your GPS's waypoints to a new file for reference in case you added any new ones you want to keep.

    4. Clear all the routes and waypoints from your GPS.

    5. Reload the waypoint file you saved before going to Fly-BY12.

Thanks Norm. I hope it's just me, but I've been getting a "Internal Server Error" every time I have tried to download the file for the past couple of hours.
Am I the only one experiencing this?

I got that error last night, and just logged in to try again when I saw your message, Gregg. Oh, well, there's plenty of time yet...

I just tried it as well and got an error msg

    500 - Internal Server Error

This server is unable to process your request right now.

    Please try again later.

While it shows 12 (now 13 after my last try) downloads I think those are the numerous unsuccessful attempts people have made.

Greg - you should have a great time. Since the Squadron meetings are so hugely attended, I haven't had a chance to meet too many local members in person. So, I'm gonna make it a point to wear my badge and seek out MI license plates and introduce myself. I'll be riding with some of the OH bunch (I know, I know), but my brother is also a member and lives there, and we're rooming together.
Look forward to meeting you in person.
