Chris these are not your normal earbuds that you get with a I-Phone, I-Pod or other such device. I haven't tried the MC-5's but I have and LOVE my Etymotic ER6i which I have heard they have discontinued. However both are made by the same company and they come with a varity of tips to fit most ears. http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/mc5.html These are replacement parts but you can see the different types better here and they do show what comes with them at the other page. http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/mc5-acc.html I personally use the 3 flange small frost ones and they fit perfectly. I never run my GPS or music much over 1 to 2 bars even at speed.
I am curious BD when you say you use the MC-5s with the Sena do you plug them into the Sena or is it just the combination? I was looking at the Scala G-4 as it could be changed from speakers to a jack to plug in the head set. I don't really have anyone to talk to but would like the bluetooth part so I wasn't tethered quite as much to the GPS.

I have been using these for several years and they work fine.
However, as they are a custom fit you will need to know where their next show will be to be fitted. -JEP-

I got the Sena and the optional base with a headphone jack. I tried it with the speakers and foam earplugs (LaserLites). It was somewhat better than the Scala G4 - the gain went higher. One of my gripes with the G4 was that the highest the volume would go was not quite loud enough. My main gripe was they kept dying on me (one channel would fail). Then I switched the Sena SMH10 to the other base and ER6i earplugs, and the sound was way better. I was able to hear clearly with the volume much lower.
My ER6is are getting a little old and I decided I wanted a new set as a spare before riding to STAR. I found they were discontinued and tried the MC-5s since the reviews were quite good. I'm very happy with the MC-5s. They sound at least as good as, if not better than, the ER6is, and the wires are heavier, and seem sturdier.
Before the Scala G4, I used an Autocom setup. The Sena SMH10 with the Etymotic MC-5s is the best setup I've used so far.

Hi Bryan,
My son and I recently upgraded from the Scala G4's to the new G9's and they are a big improvement. As you mentioned, the volume of the G4 was not quite enough when wearing earplugs. Actually if I turned mine all the way up, it was loud enough, but then I would get some distortion, so I always backed it down two clicks from max. They have addressed that with the G9, in addition to adding several other neat features. First off, I can turn the volume all the way up and it sounds great, no distortion that I can hear. The auto volume works great too. They have added voice control for the radio and the music player and phone, if your phone has voice dial.
I had a funny episode with the voice control as I was riding last week. As I turn the G9 on, the first thing I hear is the nice lady saying "mobile phone connected" I normally then say "music on" and she repeats "music on" and then the MP3 player in my phone starts playing my tunes. Well, that morning as I rode along I coughed loudly, enough to trigger the VOX, which temporarily paused the music. Instinctively, I said "sorry 'bout that". The nice lady then said "radio on". When I realized what happened, I said "no, radio off" and she complied with "radio off". Then it was back to "music on" again and I was in business. I had to laugh, (quietly) at that one. I guess if she doesn't understand what you said, she will turn the radio on.
I am still learning about the other improvements, including adding names to 8 other riders to your group. You canadd the names on their website and it will repeat the names as you select who to talk to. I only have my son in there now and she says "David Ziglar" when I select the A channel. Oh, yeah you can also change settings for VOX sensitivity, auto volume control level, etc by voice control instead of having to do it on your PC as with the G4.
Sorry to get off on a side track, but since you mentioned your experience with the G4, I thought you might like to hear a bit about the new G9. BTW, we sold our G4 set on advrider very easily and it didn't cost us much to upgrade.
See ya at avon,
Fred Z.
