    Galen,

    Neat stuff.

When I worked for the railroad, we ocassionally used motorcars to get to the work site. The M9 & M19 Fairmont motorcars had a single cylinder two cycle engine without transmission, it had belt drive. To reverse travel direction, you reversed the rotation of the engine. The engines with generators would only charge when operated in one direction, but the upgraded motorcars with alternators would charge in both directions. Used the battery to run the ignition & lights. Here's a youtube video:

Cool! When running, sounds like it needs tuning...

    Yep, very cool.

Like the railroad cars, old 2-stroke motorcycles could run backwards also. My OSSA Pioneer did it several times. The way that happened is that when kickstarting, the piston would come up on compression and kick back with enough force to rotate a full revolution in reverse at which point the engine would light off. You could easily tell because the spark timing was off and they didn't sound right but there you were with 4 reverse gears and no forward ones.

You had a timing control for when the engine was reversed. The old timers would let the engine almost stall and most of the time they could reverse engine direction without letting the engine stop. The engine sounded like a normal 2 stroke at speed.
