    Maple Syrup Ride

    Maple Syrup Ride
    April 28, 2012

Maple Syrup, we've all read and heard about how maple trees in Vermont are tapped in the spring so the sap can be collected as it starts to run, then boiled down to make maple syrup. We've all probably had maple syrup on our pancakes, waffles, or French toast many times.

Well, have you thought about going out to get some fresh syrup to bring home? I’m planning a ride to do just that after the meeting on April 28. Don't worry; it won't be a real long ride. You won't be able to earn your iron butt certification for this ride because we won't be going to Vermont. No, we'll be going to Vermontville in Michigan, not Vermont. April 27-29 happens to be the weekend of the annual Vermontville Maple Syrup Festival in, you guessed it, Vermontville. The festivities for the festival start on Friday and run through Sunday, but we'll just head over there for the afternoon after our regular breakfast on Saturday morning.

Vermontville is located about 20 miles west of Lansing. Our route will be about a 2 ½ hour ride from Karl’s Cabin, say 3 hours with a stop along the way. We'll leave about 10:30, after the meeting, and should be able to be there about 1:30.

Once there, possibilities include an arts and crafts show, an antique and classic car show, live music, the Vermontville Historical Museum, a parade, the Little Miss Maple Syrup Pageant, a petting zoo, things to eat (ride to eat, eat to ride, after all) including pancake breakfasts, and (drum roll, please) Maple Syrup! To BUY, even! In the evening, should you choose to stay that late, they'll have carnival rides, although those may be somewhat boring after our ride to Vermontville (or not).

After a few hours and a few pounds of pancakes and maple syrup, we'll head back for home via either the back roads, or via the super-slab, depending on how quickly you want to get home.

Here is the web site, http://vermontvillemaplesyrupfestival.org/ where you can learn a little bit more about the Maple Syrup Festival.

Let me know if you would like to come along, and I'll bring maps/directions. We'll see how many decide to go and split up as needed. I hope you'll join me.
