Ride To Barber Museum, April 14-15

Some of the Georgia MSTA members are going to make an overnight run to Birmingham to take in the Barber Motorcycle museum. Plans are to leave the Atlanta area Saturday am , go to the museum and stay somewhere local overnight and ride home Sunday. There was talk of eating at The Golden Rule BBQ. (Barney Rubble, you coming?)

    More details to follow.

I was just there the day before yesterday, they have many bikes on display that are new since when I was last there. Big John Surtees display as well. As usual, I really enjoyed it. I will be busy that weekend, or I would ride down and meet you there. Enjoy!

The Golden Rule is great. I go at least once when I'm at Barber. The one on Rt. 78 is my usual stop. TM

The plan for the upcoming ride to the motorcycle mecca is:

Meet at the Cracker Barrel in Douglasville, right off I-20 outside of Atlanta (7060 Concourse Parkway, Douglasville, GA 30134) at 10:00am Saturday morning.

After eating some breakfast we will venture our way to Birmingham to the museum (www.barbermuseum.org) to take in the sites.

The night's accommodations (if you choose to stay) Comfort Inn & Suites (AL435) 1951 Village Drive, Leeds, AL, US, 35094 Phone: (205) 640-6600. Using the website of www.choicehotels.com and the MSTA choice membership number (00800151), the rate is a reasonable amount - around $75 or less. Not bad if you are splitting the room. The special rate is only available online. I've stayed before at this motel and it is nice, close to the park and with the MSTA Choice code online, the rates are reasonable.

Saturday evening, we will likely go to a dinner at Golden Rule BBQ at 2506 Crestwood Blvd., Irondale, AL 35210

Sunday we will ride home at sometime.

    Hope to see you there!

    Eric,

Just a quick note, that special rate with MSTA ID# should also be good via their toll free number 877-424-6423. But it does require jumping through some more hoops. I've used it before from the lobby of a Choice Hotel after getting a quote for a room (and confirming availability) at the front desk.

Its a real shame you cannot do them in person.

PS Sounds like a fun trip, have been there once and want to go back again.

+1 on that. Excellent old style southern BBQ. I grew up in that neck of the woods (Talladega). Back in the day there was no Interstate 20 and the old restaurant on US78 was the only Golden Rule there was. I always stopped there when passing through Leeds... and still do.

If I didn't have so many MC trips coming up in the next month, I'd join you guys but alas, I'll be riding from 4/20 - 4/28 and then again the weekend of 5/4-5/6. Gotta be home sometime.

    Steve,

Thanks for the note about the toll free number. Good to know. I've also done a reservation in the lobby or parking lot using the motel wi-fi and then walk in. Sometimes the rates go up in the 24 hours before the day of the reservation. Not always, but sometimes. Still cheaper than walk up rate though.

Great to see you again Mike. It was a good time there, that's for sure. We were in gearhead heaven. The place is amazing, not matter how many times you go. Always something new to see.

    See you in Helen, Mike!
