Ok, so I'd been thinking about going wireless for awhile. Becky bought me a new Zumo 665 for my birthday, and we're getting ready to do a 2 week trip, so I thought now would be the time. After researching the different possibilities, I went ahead and called up J&M and ordered a Nolan N-103 flip face with their bluetooth system installed. Product Review (so far) as follows:

1. Customer Service and Delivery: Excellent. I ordered the helmet on a Thursday. The J&M rep said they had the N-103 I wanted in stock (Large, in Cayman Blue/White) and quoted me a couple of days for the technicians to install and test the bluetooth system, then priority mailing per my request. I received the helmet the following Wednesday, so not too bad. Good packaging, with the N-103 repackaged in its original box and helmet sack.

2. Initial Impression - Quality: When I pulled the helmet out of the box and sack, it looked brand new. No marks or scratches from the bluetooth installation. The installation itself looks very professional. J&M actually replaces the bottom trim ring of the helmet with their own, which contains wiring running from the external bluetooth controller unit on the left side of the helmet to the battery pack on the right external side of the helmet (more about the battery pack later). Speakers were nicely inset into the ear pockets. the mic boom was integrated with the end of the bottom trim ring. No wires are visible anywhere. Overall I rate the initial quality as Excellent as well.

3. Initial Operation - All I can say is "Holy Crap". According to the instructions, this thing will bluetooth mate to just about anything that sends out a signal. Since I have my 665 and my Motorola Droid smartphone, I wanted to use the 665 as the bluetooth control center for everything. No problem. With about 5 minutes of reading directions and having never even looked at the bluetooth screen on the 665, I had everything mated and operational. The 665 now streams all audio from its internal MP3, the XM radio, traffic advisories, map directions and smartphone connectivity into the helmet. There is one unique quirk I've discovered. When I first activate the 665 by turning the key on my GS, the Zumo automatically finds and links to my Droid, but not to the helmet. I have to manually direct it to search and find the helmet (which is already in its listing), and set the helmet unit to "Discover". No biggie, but it is odd. I may have a work around for that, but haven't had a chance to try it yet...

4. Operations: The helmet unit is easy to operate. It only has three buttons on the controller, and they are fairly easy to distinguish with your left, gloved hand. The main button has a number of different functions depending upon how many times you push it, how long you hold it in, etc. Speaker volume is controlled as well from these buttons, and easily adjusted. It seems to be very well thought out. Now for the biggie: battery life...are you sitting down? So far I have run the helmet unit for 21 hours on its initial full charge! That's 21 hours of constant streaming stereo music audio from the 665's XM radio, plus about 5-6 phone calls. Two of those sessions were 8 1/2 hour runs to and from Key West over a weekend. That's with the audio volume up almost on full, as I wear ear plugs. J&M claims up to 30 hours before a recharge and I'm ready to believe them. The battery on the right side of the helmet is almost the same size as the controller unit on the left, and you can feel the additional weight in the helmet, but I'll take it with that kind of battery life...

Overall, I am very impressed and satisfied with the helmet and unit. It is a little pricey but not much more so than buying the helmet and a bluetooth separately and then installing it yourself. AND, I don't think you get over 20 hours of power output from other devices on the market. Everything works as advertised, performs well and is easy to operate. I would definitely recommend this solution if anyone is looking to go complete bluetooth with their GPS/phone/audio.

I've been to NW Arkansas about 4 times and it always impresses me as some of the best riding in the country, but I've yet to make Bull Shoals until now.

If any CMM riders want to head down together, I'm leaving Thursday before noon and trying to stay with MTN just south of STL and then loafing into BS by late afternoon.

Although rooms are mostly booked at BS, there are plenty of "shares" available if you are flexible to an arrangement of this kind. The Biltmore also has cabins available I'm told.

Hope others can make Bull Shoals, this is a "classic" in the MSTA event calendar.

With dark approaching, we settled in to get as far as we could before it was too late to reasonably assure ourselves of a hotel room. The travel plan...

With dark approaching, we settled in to get as far as we could before it was too late to reasonably assure ourselves of a hotel room. The travel plan was easy enough for that… shoot E on 80/90 till 69, then N till we were good for the night. I wish I could say it was an eventful ride, but the biggest thrill was just really riding with my sons again… and I mused at my eldest son’s bare arms getting stung by splattered bugs, knowing he was too stubborn to admit a t-shirt was not appropriate riding gear. His H-D Iron 883 was our limiting range, maxed at a distance of 100 miles, so I figured he’d change soon enough. The VFR maintained my previously observed averages of 150-165 miles before the gauge blinked, with 1-.6 gallons left in the tank at fill up. With an average of 42-43 miles/gallon, the range is approx. 175-200, which is definitely beyond the butt range on even the optional low-cut seat.

Before our first fuel stop, night had settled in, and as we had expected, it started to rain. Leading on the VFR, its light cut a nice swath on 69, and the bright beam illuminated well down the road when needed. The VFR’s instrumentation is simple, relatively easy to read, and the Garmin 660 was mounted perfectly. Mirrors are really cleverly sculptured, affording a great view, and I could not help but smile at my youngest riding like a champ in the back spot on his SV650, often times giving me a head’s up on upcoming traffic, and making sure our lane was clear and protected during lane changes. As a side note, when we watched videos that my son was taking from the rear, I was impressed with the clarity and size of the VFR’s turn signals, while sadly not being impressed with the tail light or brake light in its size or intensity.

There was nothing pressing about the ride, the VFR’s suspension dampened well, but confirmed what I had decided after the first 1600 miles before this trip, that it is perhaps a bit soft for my tastes from the factory. I had left it because when my wife rides she prefers it, dare I say, “cushiony” , but I made a note to tweak it during the trip. It seems like road construction is everywhere, and MI roads are no exception, though some in my view need all the improvement they can get. The VFR handled the uneven pavement, and “lane shifts” with aplomb, and I felt confident in the rain and dark although it was the first extended time on this bike in that situation. The Dunlop SportMax RoadSmart thus seemed a very good all round sport-touring tire, but later in the trip, I did not like their tendency to tramline the interstate’s, rain-groove cut, concrete surface at 135mph. Ok, shhh, forget I mentioned that.

At the first gas stop, we changed into rain gear, which personally included my Alpinesports Boots that are seemingly impervious to water… but I realized during the moderate rain, that I wasn’t getting very wet anyway. The optional fairing “winglet” extensions, and the double windscreen I had fitted on, did a yeoman’s job of deflecting the air and water, providing a nice clean “bubble” to rest in, and I might add, alleviated the buffeting my wife had experienced before I added them… so…

When we pulled into Durand, MI at 10:30 for gas (got to love the peanut tank on the HD), I was actually relatively fresh, but have to admit, even the low cut seat was beginning to make my butt ache. Still, we decided to not push our luck and got a room at the Quality Inn across the street. I’ll not take it personally that the clerk looked at me and gave us a Senior’s Discount, smiles…. since she also gave us a children’s discount for my youngest son (as the third party in one room). The room was definitely basic, but comfy and clean, and the obligatory free continental breakfast is always a nice dangled carrot. When we did turn in, we found the hotel very quiet, and made a note to think of it on the way back should we need. But first…. After a quick unpacking of overnight stuff… it was back to the clerk for a recommendation for eats. Seems her choice was overwhelmingly for the Iron Horse Pub, downtown… and as we rode there, it seemed very possible it was the ONLY choice.

One of the neat perks of trips like these is finding little jewels off the beaten track, and the Iron Horse is definitely off the track, and also definitely a jewel. A family run establishment, the food was excellent with a varied and interesting menu. Special Props to deep fried kosher pickles that were krispy, scalding hot from the fryer, and so tasty tasty… and also a salute to the friendly waitress who was patient with our food order, brought the t-shirts out to try, never missed a beat with the drink order… and let us sit a spell through coffee towards being clear headed again.

Tired but with clear vision and thoughts once again… at 1 am (or so?) we took our 3 new t-shirts back to the Quality Inn and played some poker for beds, and zonked. Tomorrow, we would be in Niagara!

On Monday August 23rd I rode Deals Gap, my first time since the rock slide took place and has been cleaned up. There were police cars at the overlook and at the store but none in between. Had a decent ride through there. But man! I had no idea those expensive side bags were in that much danger. I'm going to have to take those succers off next time. It just didn't seem like I was going that quickly through there. I was afraid of getting a ticket.

This was my first ride through there on the strom. Even though it lacks super hp it's still fun on a twisty road.

It appears that Valentino Rossi is joining voices like Kenny Roberts, Jr., former AMA superbike winner Mladin, as he expresses his concerns about the impact of electronics controlling traction at high level motorcycle racing. Superbike Planet has a single page on the subject by Dean Adams: "... this is a big problem for Moto GP because the races are very boring." Rossi reminds us of "unbelievable racing prior to engine size reduction, with two tire manufacturers, Michelin and Bridgestone tires. Rossi seems to be critical of single source tires as well as too much reliance on electronic rider aids: "The people want to see the bike wheeling, make (it) slide." "... now like the remote control, no? The rider cannot make any more difference. On the last lap if you have 1.5 second or two second, you remain with ... maybe gain 0.5. Now is like everybody the same." For 2012, when they have to make new rules for the 1000, take out some anti-wheelie, take out some anti-spin. So I hope for fix this problem ... its not enough just to (increase capacity to) 1000. The problem is the electronic."

Vstom 1000's tend to run real lean in the 3-4K. You can go to the dealer to synch and adjust secondaries (cha-ching) or in a lot of cases the dynomax Power Commander III is the ticket. Once you read the paperwork & get the correct map (from site, stromtrooper) for your model year . Simple adjustments in the program can be made in just the RPM range to eliminate the lean nature of the 3-4K problem. After a few alterations on a 04-05 map. The bikes performance is just terrific and the caughing /sputtering is all gone.

Follow up: the synch was just a little off on my bike and was not noticable after the PCIII install , but I put it on a manometer and set the adjustment. The adjustment screw is on the front cylinder throttle body, right side of bike (lower of 2 screws is the adjustment). This is a SOB screw to get at / if you have very long needlenose pliers it can be adjusted without a gas tank/airfilter removal. It is quite sensitive to adjust and clear nail polish will help keep it set when done..

Suzuki needs a better layout for adjustment. It would be so much easier if the rear Cyl throttlebody did the adjusting...

It is made much easier if you buy 1 ft of vacuum tubing and insert a 2 way air control valve from any aquarium supply (.99 Cents) route to side of bike (keep off of hot parts). Now takes 10 sec to check with manometer without removing seat, fairing ,tank, and more.. The little vacuum tubes are hidden in the intake port under an existing line. (they have caps on them) .
Okay, I'm gearing up for this ride and looking forward to a great weekend getaway! If anyone wants to join us heading up to Porterville (avoiding the freeways), I've got a route planned out to take us up through Tehachapi to Caliente Bodfish Road to Isabella Lake. From there we'll take Hwy 155 across to other roads north up to Porterville (180-ish miles from SCV). Let me know if you're interested. We'll probably find a fun route back to avoid some of the freeway drone too. We hope to see you out there in a couple weeks!

What happened? Did Rossi deplete their budget?

http://www.roadracerx.com/breaking-n...-of-world-sbk/
Borgo Panigale (Bologna – Italy), 27 August 2010 – Ducati, having participated with a factory team in every edition of the World Superbike Championship since it began in 1988, winning 16 Manufacturers’ world titles and 13 Riders’ world titles along the way, has decided to limit its participation to the supply of machines and support to private teams.
“This decision is part of a specific strategy made by Ducati, the aim being to further increase technological content in production models that will arrive on the market in the coming years. In order to achieve this objective, the company’s technical resources, until now engaged with the management of the factory
Superbike team, will instead be dedicated to the development of the new generation of hypersport bikes, in both their homologated and Superbike race versions,” declared Gabriele Del Torchio, President and CEO of Ducati. “I would like to thank Nori and Michel, and all of the riders that have contributed to the great history of Ducati in Superbike, but above all the Ducati employees; it is their hard work and professionalism that has allowed us to achieve such important results. A big thank you also to all of the partners that have supported us, first and foremost Xerox of course. I would also like to acknowledge the Flammini brothers who have managed the championship for so long, and the FIM, the organization with which we have continuous, constructive relations.”
By making this important decision Ducati aims to increase the speed and efficiency with which it transfers advanced technological solutions, currently tested in the prototype championship, to the production series. The task of testing innovative technical solutions in Superbike racing will therefore be entrusted to external teams in the coming years, teams that will have the chance to receive technical support from Ducati personnel. This choice will allow the teams to benefit from even more competitive machines and parts.
Despite the decision to interrupt its official participation in the World Superbike Championship, Ducati will continue to work, in collaboration with the championship organizers, other manufacturers and the FIM, to define a technical regulation aimed at containing costs. Strong in the sporting spirit that has always allowed this manufacturer to compete, line-up against its rivals, and win, it is fundamental for Ducati to identify, together with the other interested parties, solutions that can guarantee the future of the championship in the medium-long term.
Recently the Superbike World Championship, according to the current regulations, has been interpreted as moving more towards competition between prototypes rather than for bikes derived from production machines. This has led to an increase in costs, both for the manufacturers and the teams participating in the championship. This picture does not correlate with the current worldwide economic situation, which has made the securing of sponsorship even more difficult. Ducati trusts that the work carried out by all parties will lead to improvement also in this area.

Since I bought the VFR1200F DCT in July, I have been looking forward to the Second Annual “Three Amigos Tour”, a now yearly late summer event with my 2 sons. They aged 23, 27 and I, are quite close and we have taken the Three Amigos moniker from the movie which we watched together repeatedly as a single Dad when they were young. Many years have passed since then and even as I watch them and my daughter age… the

realization, although my children are adults, I DON’T feel or act “old”.

As diverse in personalities the three of us, is reflected in our rides. The younger son rides a naked SV650, he bought new as a first bike with the only mod a M4 CF slip-on which gives a seriously nice sound to match his predictably excellent rider skills. The oldest son chose a new HD Iron 883 as his ride, and I am constantly amazed at the performance and aggressiveness he extracts out of that thing, attacking corners as if he was a dirt tracker and rolling on the throttle early with ridiculously quick and controlled exit speeds to make up for lack of inherent punch from the somewhat anemic V-Twin… and this year I chomped at the bit to test out the DCT... quite a contrast to the heavily massaged 2009 Vmax (just shy of 200hp at the wheel) I rode last year… which brings up the point…

is a REAL motorcyclist measured by the presence of a foot shifter and clutch lever?

So… let’s get this out there right off. I love to shift….YES I feel it is my limbic biological connection to the mechanical soul of the machine I pilot, and admittedly wear the badge proudly of having shifted countless millions of times in all conditions since I first mounted my little 50cc Zook AC-50 when I was 13. Hell, when I built my track car several years ago I had the option to use a Double-Clutch, but instead wanted the venerable older tech 6-Speed in my hand and underfoot. Thus some 42 years later, countless bikes along the way and a stable of some 10 bikes currently, there is no ego left to need to prove anything other than wanting to be a good father and husband… besides the need to always try to make myself a better rider /driver and to learn something new EVERY time I ride.

Enter something NEW… The 2010 Honda VFR 1200F D A or DCT.

Like a Pearl, the “Vee Great White” is loaded and shines even under overcast skies, on the drab concrete driveway. Alongside, the SV650, with a lone Nelson-Riggs bag on the pillion, the bike menacing in charcoal, a CF slip-on, and a quarter sized ding on the right side of the gas tank from my son’s first ride (left as a reminder of what not to do), the scarred but faithful mount brought all the way from S. Carolina to Indiana, stands ready as well. In the distance, the dogs hear the familiar potato-potato through straight pipes first… and then we point as my eldest son comes down the driveway from Chicago a comparatively scant 2 and a half hours away, wearing a large backpack and a larger smile. He deftly swings the denim-black Iron 883, appropriately named, alongside for the now traditional pre-trip group picture. Not as successfully… we spend the next 30 minutes trying to pair our chatterboxes, and as the sun starts to wane, say “F that” and say our “see-you-soons” to my wife and daughter…

the kisses and hugs mixed with the EXCITED note of 3 different exhausts, and singularly same eager voices…up the driveway…. “Here we come Niagara Falls and Canada!”

The September monthly ride just so happens to fall on Sept 11. Let us show those danged terrorist that we are free from fear and get out and ride.

Austin Area Meet and Ride September 11

Join us the second Saturday of each month (depending on rally schedule) for an enjoyable ride through central texas and the Hill Country. Really informal and we usually just show up and decide where to ride for the day unless someone passes along a suggestion ahead of time. The pace can vary depending on who shows up but everyone is highly encouraged to ride your own ride and no one has ever been left behind (we will wait on you at the next intersection )

Each even numbered month we will meet at the Signature Fuels (former Shell Station) in Dripping Springs at the intersection of RR12 and US290 at 9am

Each odd numbered month we will meet at the big quick stop at 620 and 2222 in Austin at 9am (this is the one next to Smokey Joes BBQ)

Everyone is welcome to bring a suggested route for the day or suggest a lunch spot etc. and we will decide as a group the days agenda.

Anybody that wishes to give comments or suggestions please feel free. If there are any other groups riding these days let me know and maybe we can meet half way or somewhere interesting.

BTW, Friends and family welcome as always!

Hello people, I was just heading to Broad Ripple, passing YATs and got flagged down to visit a fancy bike tuesday night convention of some sorts. Nice to meet some locals. I work second shift so I now see that the J-O-B gets in the way of my riding and social time. I had my bargain red/black weestrom tonight, was a salvage deal, easy fix and $1375 so I am loving that bike, runs great, and yes the milk crate carrier is way cool. I live on westside, Rockville Rd/465 and looking for info on MOTOGP happenings this weekend as well as upcoming rides. I ride dirt, dual-sport, supermoto, ADV, street, sport tour, and even high performance madass moped so really up for anything. 10 machines to list: main bike , 2003 Honda VFR800, silver....2007 Suzuki DL650 vstrom, blue FOR SALE $4400, 2005 Suzuki wee650 red, 1992 Yamaha tdm850, 95 Yamaha xt600, 89 VTR250 barbieceptors X2, 98 Honda Cr500, 2003 Yamaha TTr125l, Sachs Madass 138cc moped...so thats 10...if I need a dozen bikes to join club thats ok as I am looking at a few right now. So I hope to see some of you folks at the race MotoGP or out around town, cheers, Doug :21: [IMG]
Got referred to from a fellow MSTA member at TWiSTAR, checked it out, stop almost everytime we're in the area now. Mainly Pub n Grub food, burgers, fried goods, ice cream and they have great brats (jalapeno, pineapple are my favorites) Kraut and onions are a standard, however they need a good mustard. I intend to take some Boetjes with me sometime and leave a jar with them.
Heck when Jim and I did the first Fly-By in 1997, I think it was '97, we had 12 here! Jon & Janet have really made this a big event!

The burgers by Glen and Debbie's Buffalo John's were great tonight!

Now for a great day of riding tomorrow.

Great roads around here!

I'm going to the Mail Pouch Fly-By in Marietta, Ohio!

Got here today. Gary and I rode up from North Carolina. It was 422 miles from my house to the HI here. We left around 7:30AM and got here at around 7:00PM... Whahoooo... we had a ball. We rode east north east to Wilksboro where we picked up Rt 16 and took it all the way to the Ohio River 15 miles from Marietta. Go to the link about to see our route.

It looks like I didn't turn on the SPOT until later... Hmmm... I thought I turned it on??

OK very good...1) the Akrapovic' Low Mount Slip on...yay, exhaust no longer sounds like a scooter or looks like the Jetson's vacuum cleaner. The other subtle change 2) is the optional seat, which at only an inch lower and 1/2 in. narrower, still takes a huge load off my wrists and keeps the " taboo: arms locked (to keep from sliding forward)" from creeping in.

...and yours truly, snapped by my son as I was moving the bike up the driveway for photos. So... no hard time about this shot with lack of helmet and riding gear...it is a rare cameo believe me.

Hello everyone, my name is MSTAman. I am looking to attend all of the MSTA events possible, but I need your help to do it. I need a ride to each event and someone to share my adventures with. I promise I will not be a burden. I don't eat much and require very little care. All I ask is that you help me post photos and excerpts of my adventures to the MSTA forum (I am not very good with a computer and need lots of help with this). Also, I would need you to get me to the next event and help me find a ride to continue on my adventure. Any extra riding that we can do in between events would be great, I live to ride!

Look for me at the MPFB, where I'll be looking for a ride to the next event, the Ozarks BS Rally. Hopefully, someone will be able to give me a ride, if you can, let me know. Look for updates after or possibly during MPFB.

I hope to meet you at an event soon!

I've got a 2001 Honda VFR--the last of the gear driven cams. Bike runs great--no starting, running issues--it's all great. Lately, I've been hearing a slight rattle (ticking?) coming from what sounds to me like the bottom right side of the engine. Kinda sounds like a bb in a tin can--nothing major and seems to come on when the engine is a warm. Friend told me it could be an injector. If it is an injector, does that mean it's gone bad? Just needs to be cleaned? Pretty certain it's nothing major, just one minor flaw in what I feel is a nearly flawless bike.

Any advice is appreciated--thanks in advance.

If you happen to be in the North Carolina area this morning, you might consider trekking over to High Point. From Janet Downing...
*****

Dear Friends,

I want to let you know about the following service rather than have someone say later, if I'd known I would have been there. Sorry I did not let you know sooner, but as you can imagine I have been very busy trying to pull together all the information for this program.

The friendships made through HSTA/MSTA are very special, the fun riding around different areas of the country wonderful! I hope to continue with you in the future.

Springfield's Friends Meeting's Memorial Association recognizes an individual each year at the annual meeting (homecoming) who is buried in our cemetery. This year the program is to be about the life of Melbourne T. L. Downing, Jr. who served Springfield as organist/pianist for almost 50 years (47 to be exact). He is the longest serving staff member in the 237 year history of Springfield Friends Meeting. Uniquely, this program is about someone who everyone presently involved in the Meeting knows and someone who has touched their lives in some way during his almost 50 years of service as organist/pianist.

Debbie, Lynne and I are preparing a program to be presented during the 11 o'clock Meeting for Worship on Sunday, August 15 and we hope that you can join us. There is a carry-in meal following at 12 Noon. During the lunch hour we are planning to have a pictorial presentation of Mel's life. Following lunch we invite each of you to join us at our home in Kernersville where we can continue to visit and reminisce.

The museum will be open during the lunch hour and after the business meeting for those interested in touring. We have some very unique items of old domestic art in our museum.

Our family will be donating a photo of Mel at the piano at Springfield, and the organ, his music portfolio and his organ playing shoes to the museum. The Meeting is presenting a large photo of Mel and I, which will be hung in the hallway outside the choir loft where the choir meets each Sunday morning before entering the sanctuary.

Again, I'm sorry for this late notice and hope you can join us for this special service honoring the memory of a very special man.

If you can't be with us in person, please keep us in your prayers as we give tribute to a husband, father and grandfather, brother, musician, friend....we will need your support to get us through a very special, but difficult service for one who only left our presence 11 months ago.

****
The Springfield Friends Meeting is located at
555 East Springfield Rd
High Point, NC

It pleases me to be able to attend Mel's memorial. He was one of the first guys to take me under his wing and invite me to ride with him at my first STAR in Nashville, IN.

I can't decide if I need to replace my current chain ... It is a DID gold "O" ring with about 11K on it. I never spared any lube, but noticed it is starting to try to "kink" just a bit (usually as it needs lube)... There is no apparent wear on the sprockets. I'm not looking for advice on lube or chain wax (this can sometimes be as bad as the oil thread). I have a 5,000 or 6,000 mile trip coming up in about 3 weeks, and need to make a decision... What's the current thinking on wear and changing...
Thanks in advance...

Ok folks here is another option that has worked very well for me. It would work perfect on a concrete floor or wooden floor like mine.

UPs - it is so easy to turn your bike around it almost feels like it is on ball bearings.
DOWNs - You have to have a designated bike parking spot.

Supplies
1 each 4x8 sheet of 3/4" plywood (rough on both sides is fine) Not really necessary but I didn't want to mess up the wood floor of my shop.

1 each 4 foot by 16 inches piece of metal (I used a piece of sheet metal I found on the road that had fallen out of some trash truck. It needed some straighting but a hammer and and a piece of 2x4 worked fine.

1 each piece of heavy plastic at least 16" in diameter (I cut up a piece of carpet protection matting. The kind you slide under your desk so your chair will roll easier. I had to rasp off the little knobbies so both sides would be smooth.

1 each 3/4" round head bolt - Mine is 1/4" thick - you can use larger if you want but it only needs to be long enough to just go through the plywood, metal and plastic and not stick up like a thorn that would damage your tire.

2 tablespoons of bearing grease

4 to 6 flat head wood screws coarse thread 1/2 inch long

Tools
1 each drill
1 each drill bit slightly smaller than your wood screws
1 each drill bit slightly LARGER than your round head bolt
1 each screwdriver - cross or slot would depend on the screws you use

Instructions:
1 - lay the plywood down on the floor where you want to spin your bike
2 - lay the piece of metal on the plywood board approximately in the middle of the plywood
NOTE: For most bikes with a centerstand it is easier to lift it if the front wheel is lower than the rear wheel. Thus if you position your metal so that is the case the metal will be closer to one end of the plywood. Or you could use a piece of 1x6 and that works just fine too.
3 - using the drill and a selected drill bit slightly smaller than the wood screws - drill a hole in each of the corners of the metal.
NOTE: You want to get pretty close to the corner to keep it from folding up on you with standard ware.
4 - Using the screwdriver, secure the metal to the 4x8 sheet of plywood with the wood screws
5 - Position the plastic on top of the metal in the center (width) of the plywood.
6 - Using the Drill and large drill bit, drill a hole in the center of the plastic continuing on through the metal and plywood.
7 - Evenly spread the grease on the plastic
8 - Put the greased side down on the metal so the holes line up
9 - Insert the round head bolt through the hole - it should be slightly snug but not so much as to bind the rotation of the plastic on the metal

Well good evening folks from the 104 degrees of Texas. I read about MSTA in the Rider magazine and thought I'd stick my nose in for a look see. Been riding for a while. Got my first bike back in 1962 (a Harley Hummer) - stop laughing. I know the Cushman Eagle was faster. Anyway it got stolen and I went a few years without a bike. In 1969 I bought a BSA 441 Victor. Now that bike could pull up tree stumps. Traded it in on a Suzuki RM? 250 - the enduro version. Daily ride to work and on the weekends I'd take the lights off, put a number on it and head to the motocross track. That was when the Montessa, Bultoco, Penton, and a few others were the bike to have for that kind of ridding. Never won anything but had a great time. My next bike was a Vulcan 88. Nice change from the old 2 strokes of old. Now I'm ridding an 05' Honda ST1300A. Another nice change from the cruiser style. I really enjoy the way it handles and is very comfortable on those long distance trips I like to take.

Well that's about enough for now - got a Labor day trip coming up so I'll be posting the results a bit later.

I'm looking foward to be part of your group.I been ridding for 23 years and found about your organizantion through a motorcycle magazine. Is there any other meeting before October 16 in Florida ? October 16 is also Daytona Biketober fest ! May I sugest moving the date to a different Saturday ? I live in Orlando,Florida and every year I like to go to St.Augustine for brunch and from there take the A1A to Daytona passing through Flager and Ormond beach, this is a beautiful ride on one of the only places were people are not allowed to built houses on the beach,so the view is awsome.I know I'm new to the organization and probably Daytona bike week is not really your guys things to do list ,but Daytona is one of the rare opportunities to see different bikes. Please let me know about other meetings before October 16.

Thanks

A couple people have suggested I hit the Mail Pouch Fly By, and it seems a good idea to me. I've attended in the past and had fun. So I went hunting for this years info, and found it here. So I've signed up for this forum while I am here! Hello!

My name is Katherine and I think the last time I attended the Fly-By, it was still the HSTA, my bike was a 1984 Honda V65 Sabre, and I was riding with my friend Phil, who lived in Columbus then.

I wore out two Sabres, sold a third still in running condition, and got a 2003 DL1000 V-Strom. I sold the V-Strom last year and now I have a 2010 Honda NT700V. I also have a 1994 VFR and a 1992 TDM. I'll take the NT to the Fly-By.

I've been riding since 1998, and I have been to a lot of awesome places. I can't wait to get out there again.

Having withdraws from my adventure at NVR, I'm ready to hit the trails again this weekend. Problem is I need a riding partner or two to make sure I get back home :4:. If anyone in Northern VA or just south who would like to ride this weekend I have a trailer for two bikes and ready to ride. I can ride anywhere north of I64 and points West, and prefer the northern part of western VA to ride. Stauton has always been good and parts of Canan Valley are beautiful and cool riding this time of year.

Drop me a line and let me know if you are up for some beautiful summer DS riding in the mountains of VA and/or WVA. Again, we can trailer to the starting point as a safety net. Footnote, I'm running 80/20 (street/dirt) tires currently and really need to bleed the remaining 40% rubber off them. Can handle most medium off-road trails, but like the fire roads best.

Been riding, (and shifting, lol) 41 years, since 14, came across the forum, and thought I'd join since I have a new bike which is in this class: a 2010 Honda VFR 1200F DA (DCT version). I bought, and removed fresh from crate end of last month, and went from 0 to 1400 miles now on what is definitely a new mindset in motorcycling. It truly is a helluva bike.

So hello to all. Looking forward to shared experiences and see MSTA as a possible resource.

Here's my bike and yes, only red is available in North America, and yes again, mine is the ONLY OEM pearl white on the continent. :21:

On my way back from Ed and Linda Young's annual pool party in Mountain Grove, Mo.(the hosts of the MSTA BS Rally), I tried to draw a straight line from their home in central MO. to the bridge over the Black River at Pocahontas, AR. Knowing the Eleven Point River area pretty well, because I've canoed it for 40 years, I zigzagged across it at various bridges on my way southward. From my last major highway, Hwy. 142 I turned south on county road U, I think, which took me toward the town of Myrtle, MO. However right before getting there I took V, I think, to the east which looked like on the map to eventually go in the direction that I wanted to go.

The pavement quality on this particular section was pretty good, so like most of the day, I was averaging an aggressive pace but staying just short of my Tom Foolery pace because I was riding by myself. The road curved to the right and over a slight hill. All of a sudden it turned to gravel without warning! There I was one moment leaned over on good pavement at the Isle of Mann and the next moment leaned over on a gravel covered turn in the Baja 1000 on a 600 lb. street bike doing 65 miles per hour. I've been tested before, but I must say this one challenged every automatic skill that I could muster up. The road was not only turning to the right and covered with loose rocks on hard pack dirt, it had rock infested ditches on each side. As I was using every trick I could to keep the bike on the road and not drift off the road into the ditch on the opposite side, I kept telling myself between outrageous tank slappers, "Stay on the road! Don't go down! Keep it up!" Just when I thought it was useless and I was going to crash, go over the handlebars, and have a 600 lb. motorcycle get even with me, the bike quit swapping ends and straightened up for a second. However, by now I was in the ditch on the left and still doing around 40 mph. I told myself, "Self, if you can pull off what you just did, some rock infested ditch aint going to end your day!". I rode it out for what seemed like one full minute until something took the handlebars out of my hands and I fell over doing maybe 10 mph.

After taking a second to regain my bladder, I took my helmet off and struggled to pick up the bike. After I finally got it on it's side-stand, I started assessing the carnage. My tank bag fell off, I scuffed up my right side fairing and saddle bag, but that was it! Low and behold not even a lever or foot peg was broken. In fact, my mirrors didn't even need adjusting. Talk about lucky! Even though it was going to probably cost me $500 to get the fairing and saddle bag repainted, I considered this one of the luckiest days of my life!

Even scarier, had there been a car coming, I probably would not be typing this, and hopefully there would be a plaque with melted candle wax on it at the turn. So, the moral of this story is for none of you to put yourself in a position to repeat it. I know that is going to be hard to do because we all go fast around curves that we have never seen before. But if you are ever on a county road you have never been on that does not have a center stripe, try to remember this story and approach every turn like it was going to turn to gravel, because one of these days it probably will.

I recently posted in the Garage sub-forum about my newest project – a 1982 Honda Ascot FT500 (500cc single) I've adopted with the intent of restoration.
http://www.sporttouring.us/showthrea...ration-project

It's been incredibly hot here recently so I've been spending some quality time with the “new” bike in my semi-air-conditioned garage. As is usually my approach with kind of thing, to this point I've been focusing on mechanical issues and reserving the time-consuming cosmetic improvements for later. I like to get the thing running and riding correctly first to be sure it's worth the effort before I try to make it look nice. I've pretty much gone through the bike end-to-end now and among other things have fresh tires, a new chain, fresh fluids everywhere and a newly rejetted carb. It's still a bit rough visually but quite rideable.

Our weather improved dramatically yesterday with lower temperatures and, more importantly, lower humidity. For several days I've been meaning to mail my off-road boots down to fellow MSTA member Randy Logan in Knoxville (Logan's Magic Shoe Care) for sole replacement. But, since I had this new (to me) bike, a beautiful day on tap (zero rain chance) and nothing more important to do, I decided to deliver the boots in person. At 7:30 this morning with a bit of morning mist still hanging around the mountains I was on my way to K-town. It was actually a little cool at 67 degrees when I left – how refreshing!

Two hours and 100 miles of secondary roads later my boots were in Randy's capable hands. We talked for a while and kicked the tires on the Ascot until another customer showed up. As I was getting ready to leave, Randy asked me how I was going home and I told him I might make the return more interesting than the trip down. His DR650 was parked in front of the shop and his last words as I went out the door were something along the lines of, “I'm envious”.

When I pulled out of his parking lot I had not yet really decided what route I would take home but the sign saying “US129” captured my eye and imagination. Why not? I don't usually go to “the Dragon” particularly on weekends but I haven't been there in a couple of years, and heck, it IS a great road and it was only mid-morning and I figured even with the crowds it would still be fun if I took my time and tried not to get frustrated by the traffic.. Besides, I had this brand new rubber on the Ascot just begging to have those little molding nipples worn off. So yeah, I turned south on US129 towards Alcoa / Maryville and ultimately the “Tail of the Dragon”.

Saturday morning traffic was light on 129 and I was still toying with the idea of just taking Foothills Parkway over to Townsend rather than actually running “318 curves in 11 miles section” until I stopped for gas a young guy on a bike asked me for directions. As I was telling how to get there the idea became reality for me, so yeah, it was a go.

I expected to see a lot of cops on the approach along the lake. Turns out there weren't any but I was very careful to stay close to the posted limit (50, then 40, then 30) since this is where they used to nail nearly everyone. Just as I started up the mountain I came up behind a couple in a yellow Mustang GT convertible . His driving style was slow through the tight curves and then hard acceleration coming out I guess he like the rumble of the V-8 which, I gotta say, did sound pretty cool. Since I was staying right with him he saw the light (literally) and and pulled over and let me go by. Thank you!. Sailed right past the overlook on fresh (since I was here last) asphalt with no apparent traffic in front of me. The single cylinder Ascot is joy on this kind of road. Less than 400 lbs wet, very narrow profile and lots of torque. It just a roll-on roll-off kind of ride. Even though I’ve made a couple of changes to improve steering response this bike has a lot of trail and will always be slow to turn in relative to a sport bike. But, it's very stable and can achieve crazy lean angles before anything touches down. So, about half way though going south-bound I came up behind some slower cruisers, not painfully slow, just a little slower than I wanted to ride. So, I would pull over and stop whenever I caught up to them. Then, after a couple of minutes, when the Mustang would appear in my mirrors I’d be off again to ride at my pace until I caught them again. Again I expected more cops although I did meet one Tennessee State Trooper while running about 10 over but he either wasn't paying attention or more likely was looking for more interesting prey in the form of one of the maxed out sport bikes that routinely run this road. There were a number of photographers in the curves (Killboy, US129Photos, zeephotos, etc) and parked with one of the there was a Blount County sheriffs car apparently waiting for someone to show off for the camera. Not me, I'm just an ole fart riding “the pace”. So, I caught the cruisers four times before getting to the Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort. The last time was just south of the state line where we stopped for a line of vehicles waiting to pass by a crash scene. Apparently the SV1000 they were pulling up the mountain had only made it about 300 yds from the resort before punching in. I'm told the rider was air-lifted out. The road is actually fairly straight here so I'm guessing he was one of the many squids who wheelie out of the parking lot. This kind of thing happens at least once every weekend and that's why there is such a significant police presence. I have to say they have the rescue procedure down to a fine art here with “civilians” in yellow vests directing traffic in addition to the official LEOs and EMTs.

No matter what your motorcycling interest, the Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort is a very entertaining place. Today, in addition to the normal collection of sport bikes from exotica to scarred up rats, loaded tourers, shiny cruisers, and wicked looking motards from 250 to 1000ccs, (plus one tattered old Honda Ascot) there was a group of riders from Italy. They were all wearing jackets with the same club logo and an Italian flag. Oddly they were on all different kinds of bikes (sport bikes and cruisers) which appeared to by their own rather than rentals. That had to be an expensive trip for this group. OBTW, the resort store was doing a booming business in tee-shirts, decals, and such. This place is dead as a fallen leaf in the winter (which is when I prefer to go!) but they're rocking right now!

At Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort

I sat around enjoying the ambiance for 30 or 40 minutes and ate a snack at the resort then headed back towards home on 129. As I got my gear on I watched the north-bound traffic to try and give my self some riding room. That's a challenge on the weekend because the traffic is pretty constant. After several minutes of no one leaving a couple of sport bikes took off towards Tennessee and while I figured they wouldn't hold me up I waited a bit longer until a car came into view coming up the hill. I took off ahead of the car thinking there was nothing in front of me for several minutes. I never saw the sport bikes again. What I did see about 2 miles in was a pair of slow-moving “baggers” riding two-up. These bikes must have been parked along side of the road because I didn’t remember seeing them pull out of the Motorcycle Resort. These riders were VERY slow. So slow I had to go to first gear several times. Heck I had time to count the freckles on the pillon rider’s back (who was wearing a tank top of course). I mean really, any decent bicyclist could have easily passed them on the downhills. But to their credit, they knew they were holding up traffic and pulled over and let me pass as soon as they came to a turnout (of which there are many now). Although I met a lot of on-coming traffic in long lines, from there all the way to the overlook, it was MY road. I enjoyed riding the torque of the big single, running a gear higher than I would have on one of my 650 twins. Roll-on, roll off. I didn’t catch up to anyone else and no one caught up to me. It was fun. Not bad, not bad at all for a Saturday in August. So, I now have my annual trip to the “Tail of the Dragon” behind me. Although it's only about 100 miles away we have so many good roads here in the southern Appalachians that its just not worth the risk to go there often.

After my lap of the Dragon, I took the Foothills Parkway over to Townsend then Little River Rd through the Great Smokey Mountain National Park to just south of Gatlinburg (gag!) on US421. Got home around 4:30PM and by then I had ridden the little red Ascot about 345 miles of 2-lane mostly curvy roads. I've ridden my modern bikes a lot further of course but trust me that's a long day on a 28 year old motorcycle. It was hoot. This bike is definitely a keeper. Now back to cleaning, de-rusting and painting. :113:
