PAUL CAIN 1937 – 2010

No doubt others will write about Paul, people more skilled than I. Nonetheless, I’ve known Paul a long time and I wish to share some of my memories with fellow MSTA friends.

Firstly, Paul introduced me to HSTA. He told me about a special riding group and wouldn’t let up until I had joined.

My first experience with HSTA was my riding from East Texas to Bull Shoals to the HSTA rally in, maybe, ’93. When I got there I didn’t know a soul, but Paul had arranged for Dane Parish to greet me and introduce me around. By the time Paul got there several hours later, I felt like an old hand.

You see, Paul had a passion for knowing people and he wanted to share all of his friends with all of his other friends. So wherever he went, he would first meet everyone there, then introduce you to everyone there.

Paul had five other loves: Louray, animals, motorcycles, travel and jazz. He mixed and matched those interests with an energy that knew no bounds. When he traveled by motorcycle, he wanted to feed every hungry animal he saw; in every town where he spent the night, he would ask if there was a place to hear jazz; his day wasn’t complete until he had called Louray to tell her all that he had seen.

I met Paul shortly after high school when we were called up by Selective Service to go from Sulphur Springs, TX to Dallas to take our Army physical examinations. Before getting on the bus, the local Reserve commander selected one of us to handle the packet containing everyone’s personnel dossier. He selected Paul. From that day forward, I called him Fearless Leader.

Months later we met again at college through a mutual friend. It was soon obvious that we had common interests: sports car racing, jazz, and architecture. We and Ben Anglin and other friends would gather at my room and listen to music and play table games, mostly dominos, and laugh ourselves hoarse. We called ourselves Bowsers. We never stopped being Bowsers.

Paul went on to Indiana U. for his PhD. He subsequently retired to Bloomington where he met Moose and other HSTA stalwarts. Prior to that, though, he was on the faculty of the University of Texas, Houston and rode with The Retreads, a group of older riders. And he traveled. He made two trips to Alaska and on the last trip, went all the way to Prudhoe Bay on a KLR 650.

A favorite place was Newfoundland. He went there twice and we were planning another trip when he got sick.

Paul had a massive stroke about seven years ago, which affected his vision and reading skill (he could write, but then couldn’t read what he’d written). That caused him to give up his beloved Yamaha Majesty and retire from HSTA.

Though doctors opined that Paul would not have another stroke, he had two more, the third of which was fatal.

Oh God! What a load of memories he left behind:

His riding a Water Buffalo across a meadow when the grass was so tall we could just see him from the shoulders up. When he hit a big gopher hole and went down, we had trouble finding him;

His showing up at our house one spring night, having ridden the 300 miles from Houston; he and the VFR were completely slimmed from riding through swarms of locusts:

Our running as a team in sports car time-distance rallies in a pair of Fiat 600’s as Scudaria Bowseri. Ben Anglin was Paul’s navigator, a Mary Stewart navigated for me. She wasn’t as good a navigator but was more fun to dance with afterwards:

Paul’s racing a Scuraria Bowseri Bugeye Sprite in SCCA; Ben, Mary and I went to Houston to attend Paul’s wedding. But, since he had rescheduled the wedding because of a conflict with a race, we went to Hondo to pit for him and watch him race instead.

Ben, Paul and I were riding toward Mount Magazine in a blinding rain. Then we realized Paul wasn’t with us. We doubled back and found him feeding a stray dog.

We were accustomed to getting his scribbled postcards from distant places. Labrador. New Zealand. Most recently, he had a temporary job teaching English in Korea. He borrowed a scooter and saw as much of Tailand as time allowed.

Paul didn’t keep anything to himself. If he liked something, he wanted you to know about it and like it too. He knew we liked a wine from a Bloomington vineyard. He brought us a case of it on the back of his VFR from Bloomington to Texas. He knew our taste in music and brought us many CD’s with no thought that I would ever repay him.

A non-motorcycle-riding Bowser, Jim Roberts, and I drove up to Bloomington in my Miata. Upon leaving, Paul presented us with a four-foot high trophy with the engraved inscription “LONG DISTANCE AWARD FOR MARRIED MEN TRAVELING IN PAIRS”

Paul used some words that haven’t yet found their way into the dictionary. A common word fo greeting or goodbye was “Poobah”. Anything that was especially good was “veeble”.

So, poobah to Paul. He was a veeble friend.

Somebody talk me out of thoughts of heading north instead of going to this rally. I am primed to hit the road tomorrow and enjoy some of southern Mo. Watching WX forecast has me heading into Biblical floods. Bummer, as vacation time is to dear. I want to ride, not sit in my soggy tent. I'm in central Illinois. S.W. Wisconsin is looking pretty good. Anyone?

Having owned a 2000 Kawasaki W-650 I would like to see them bring it over here again.

That's yet another bike I should have kept. It just felt like a motorcycle. It had both elect and kick start, perfect pea shooter exhausts that were plenty loud in stock form. Don't know how they got it past emissions? I had progressive fork springs put in which secured the handling, or improved it anyway. I rode that thing to Colorado. It was my first trip on a motorcycle out west and I thoroughly enjoyed riding the W in the mountains out there.

Going out to Colorado on the W-650 I got lots of compliments on my Bonneville. I finally quit explaining and just said "thanks".

Just joined the forum yesterday and still trying to feel my way around. Any tips? My buddy turned me on to the site as this seems to be exactly the crowd we have been looking for.

I've been riding for about 10 years and currently saddle up on a 2007 Buell XB12X Ulysses. My previous bike was a Suzuki Bandit 600S. I like to take long rides on the beach and have candle-lit dinners....oh wait, wrong forum. We try to take a couple long rides a year and recently started camping with the bikes. With a firefighter's schedule, it can be interesting getting enough time off to really hit the road, but day trips are nice too.

We're considering starting a chapter in the South Chicago region as well, so any tips or pointers we can get regarding that would be great too.

Thanks for being out there.
When hurried corner workers came, they picked him up like a piece of debris and dropped him while being carried. If you havent seen the race, I dont recommend it. It is very graphic and very frustrating the way the accident scene was managed. The prosecutor of Rimini has now launched an investigation and considering action.
